We are delighted to announce the appointment of three new directors to join the Senior Leadership Team alongside Chief Executive, Ellie Orton, in January 2021.

The appointments of a new Director of Fundraising, Director of Membership and Impact, and Director of External Affairs and Communications comes after a record year with public support and generosity raising over £140 million our Covid-19 Appeal.

Ellie Orton, our Chief Executive, said:

Ellie Orton, CEO

“This year has been like no other and has been an extremely challenging time for the NHS and NHS charities. As a result, our member NHS charities and NHS Charities Together have had to step up to provide support beyond anything we have achieved before. I am delighted that we will be joined by Louise, Richard and Sarah, who will work with our members and dedicated team to develop our charity and its support of NHS staff, volunteers and patients into 2021 and beyond.”

About the new directors

Louise McCathie, Director of Fundraising

Louise joins NHS Charities Together from Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, where she has been Director of Fundraising since 2009. During this time, she has managed multiple capital appeals and led her team to triple the charity’s fundraising income. Louise has acquired a wide range of experience during her 18 years in the charity sector, starting her career at the National Institute of Conductive Education, then ChildLine, followed by leading the British Heart Foundation’s Central England events team, before moving to Mencap, helping to organise several high-profile national campaigns. Louise is well-known to NHS charity members from her position as Chair of the Fundraising Mutual Interest Group.

In 2015, Louise was presented The Gill Astarita Fundraiser of the Year Award at the Institute of Fundraising’s National Fundraising Awards and Fundraising Team of the Year at The Charity Times Awards.

Louise says: “I am excited, but also privileged, to have this incredible opportunity to lead fundraising for NHS Charities Together in its next chapter. Having first-hand experience of, and witnessing the challenges of, this year as part of an NHS charity, whilst working with the amazing professionalism and warmth shown by our NHS colleagues to support patients and families in their care, growing the impact of this organisation on a national scale is truly a dream job for me. I can’t wait to meet all our members and get stuck in!”

Richard Scarth, Director of Membership and Impact

Currently, Deputy Chief Executive at Royal Free Charity, Richard was Director of Operations for five years before being promoted to his current role earlier this year.

During Richard’s time at Royal Free Charity, he has been responsible for significant growth in the range of services it offers and was at the forefront of cultivating productive relationships with stakeholders. Richard began his career in finance and has previously held senior positions within several large healthcare organisations.

Richard says: “I couldn’t be more excited to be joining NHS Charities Together at such a pivotal moment both for the organisation and the NHS. The potential for NHS Charities Together to make a huge difference has never been greater and our partnerships with our member organisations will be crucial to delivering this.”

Sarah Campion, Director of External Affairs and Communications

Sarah Campion brings with her a strong track record in not-for-profit and public sector leadership, with over twenty years’ experience of delivering successful marketing and communications strategies for the likes of the NHS, Macmillan Cancer Support, Lambeth Council and most recently as Director of Engagement at national research charity, Fight for Sight.

Joining the senior team at this defining moment, Sarah will lead the charity’s external communication strategy, shaping its brand and engagement with charity members, supporters and other key stakeholders.

Sarah says: “The advent of Covid-19 has reminded us all of the crucial role of the NHS and its dedicated staff. I’m delighted to be joining the NHS Charities Together team at this extraordinary moment. I look forward to working with our incredible members and fundraisers as we join forces and harness the momentum of the nation’s heartfelt support of our vital health services.”
