NHS Big Tea

What is the NHS Big Tea?

The NHS Big Tea is an annual fundraising and awareness campaign with the aim of celebrating the NHS’ birthday on 5 July and recognising the vital work of NHS charities in supporting our health service.

In hospitals, in homes and in local communities across the country, everyone who loves the NHS is encouraged to come together with friends, family and colleagues to host their own tea party and ‘raise a cuppa’ to the NHS.

NHS Big Tea 2020

This year NHS Charities Together is raising a cuppa to nurses and midwives on and around 5th July as part of the NHS’ national campaign for the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. More information is coming soon, along with fundraising packs and all you need to know to get involved. Let’s say thank you together to the NHS.

The History of the NHS Big Tea

NHS Big 7Tea – 2018

The campaign was established by NHS Charities Together in 2018 to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS, with more than 4,000 parties taking place across the UK. Over £180,000 was raised for NHS charities.

In addition, the campaign generated substantial media coverage and publicity including:

  • a live broadcast of ITV’s This Morning from Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital in west London, featuring a tea party and interviews with patients, NHS staff and fundraisers
  • a City Hall tea party event hosted by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and members of the London Assembly
  • public endorsements and hospital visits from celebrities including: Stacey Solomon; John Craven; Lorraine Kelly; Holly Willoughby; Amanda Holden; Edith Bowman and many more
  • NHS Charities Together chosen as official charity partner for the Daily Mail Health Hero Awards (September) and the Health Service Journal Awards (November).

The campaign was fully supported by NHS England and formed part of the wider celebrations around NHS70 throughout the year.

The NHS Big Tea was developed in 2019 as an annual day for the Nation to celebrate the NHS, say thanks and give back on its anniversary 5th July
