The designs are available as free downloads and donations are being encouraged for the NHS Charities Together Covid-19 Appeal.

Louise Hooper, who started the Thank You Flag campaign, said: “I set this up as I wanted to do something tangible to show our support for all the wonderful people working tirelessly on the front line. I kept putting my thumbs up at passing ambulances rushing past, but suddenly thought a Thank You Flag would be more effective.

“I know many of us will be staying indoors for the next few weeks or months, but a flag on your car outside, or in your front window, is a good way to show the health workers passing by that we are rooting for them and thanking them from the bottom of our hearts.”

Well known faces are among the individuals already putting up their flags. The actors and celebrities include Emma Thompson, Russell Tovey, Tamsin Grieg and Cold Feet’s Hermione Norris. Fay Ripley, Katherine Kelly, Stephen Rae, Tom Goodman Hill, Lydia Leonard, Burn Gorman, Julie Graham and Chizzy Akudolu have also downloaded the flag.
